Whether or not Twitter has hit a traffic growth ceiling, the 140 character status update platform has already proved it can permeate past its early adopter audience and attract a more mainstream user-base complete with Twittering athletes, celebrities, and government officials.
Along the way, Twitter has also managed to grab a lot of attention as the easy scapegoat in parody videos. We’ve seen comedic geniuses, late-night talk show hosts, and many video production companies all try to best each other in a battle for the funniest Twitter spoof or satire. Not all are created equal, but the 10 we’ve included here are some of the sure-fire standouts.
Twitter may be the butt of everyone’s joke, but after the news of a $1 billion valuation, we have a sneaking suspicion that Twitter will eventually have the last laugh.
Real Life Twitter
What would life be like if we audibly announced our tweets to the world instead of sharing them on Twitter? If Dan’s Twitter in real life experiment tells us anything, it would be quite odd.
The CollegeHumor dude treks around New York shouting out pointless babble in 140 characters or less. We can’t help but LOL uncontrollably as his real life tweets give life to some pretty awkward situations with confused New Yorkers. Lesson learned: tweeting in real life about the guy with b.o. standing next you is a bad idea.
Most retweetable line: “Finally got around to checking out the college humor show, meh.”
Flutter: The New Twitter
Flutter happens to be one of our favorite Twitter parodies. The mocumentary takes an insightful look behind the scenes of faux company Flutter. The new web craze brings nanoblogging to the world so that those of us with shorter attention spans can share 26 character flaps (their equivalent to tweets). We actually quite like the idea of those Fluttereyes glasses.
Most retweetable line: On why Twitter is just too much, co-founder Zach says, “It’s like hundreds of characters that you have to read.”
Twitteleh: Twitter for Your Jewish Mother
Update your Jewish mother in seconds. That’s the premise behind Twitteleh, a Twitter alternative for avoiding long calls with your Jewish mother. Use Twitteleh instead and update her on the status of your life, by answering three simple questions: Where are you? What have you eaten? Are you wearing a sweater?.
Most retweetable line: “Actually calling your Jewish mother takes hours, and drains you of energy.”
Twouble with Twitters
Twouble with Twitters was the first of Current’s SuperNews viral video sensations dedicated to mocking the micro-platform.
Oh the horror! When Craig realizes that Derek isn’t hip to the Twitter revolution he takes him into the Twittersphere. But watch out, the Fail Whale makes an ominous appearance taking a bite out of Craig’s Twitter fantasy world.
Most retweetable lines: “I just twooted all over the place,” and “it seems like Twittering is randomly bragging about your unexceptional life.”
@RedHourBen Meets with @RyanSeacrest
Comedian Ben Stiller, who’s relatively new to Twitter, is preoccupied with getting more followers. In this dry humor video, Stiller attempts to convince Ryan Seacrest to tweet something in reply @RedHourBen. Of course it’s all just fun and games, but we especially love the moments when Seacrest lords his follower count over Stiller. Priceless!
Most retweetable line: “I don’t even talk to anybody that has less than 900,000 followers.”
Twitter Cops
Longtime Twitter users often tell stories of the early days when tweeting was just for the tech-set. In those days there was a very vocal minority who often pontificated about appropriate Twitter etiquette. Now that Twitter is mainstream, those days are long gone, but we do still have the Twitter Cops. These bad boys are here to fight the scourge of boring tweets, one bad tweet at a time. Warning: video includes strong language.
Most retweetable line: “All we’re doing is protecting people from posts that no one wants to read.”
Tweetlejuice
Beetlejuice, the classic character from late 80s/early 90s pop culture, is reborn in this CollegeHumor spoof as Tweetlejuice. His mission: to help you kill off the Twitterers that bore you to death. All you need to do is tweet with the #tweetlejuice hashtag three times with an @reply to the Twitter user you’d like to see destroyed.
Most retweetable line: “Kill, torture, maim, anything you want really… @aplusk @therealshaq @ijustine @johncmayer.”
